Frequently Asked Questions
What is this mentoring programme?
This is a structured coaching and mentoring programme for transport managers, focused on operational readiness and operational control.
It uses real-world scenarios to support judgement, decision-making, and confidence in day-to-day compliance situations. It is not classroom training and not consultancy.
Is this training?
No. This is not a formal training course and does not lead to a qualification or certificate.
The focus is mentoring — helping transport managers think through situations, sense-check decisions, and understand how those decisions could be justified and evidenced if challenged.
Is this consultancy?
No. Consultancy involves taking responsibility for decisions, systems, or outcomes.
This programme provides guidance and mentoring only. Members remain fully responsible for their own decisions, compliance, and actions at all times.
Who is this programme suitable for?
This programme is particularly suited to:
- lone or external transport managers
- deputy transport managers or supervisors stepping up into the role
- experienced transport managers, owner operators and operator licence holders, who want a sounding board
- transport managers who value calm judgement and defensible systems
It is designed for people who want support with decision-making, not delegation of responsibility.
Who is it not suitable for?
It may not be suitable for:
- operators seeking emergency or outsourced transport management
- people wanting someone else to make decisions on their behalf
- box-ticking or exam-style learning
- anyone expecting guarantees of compliance or enforcement outcomes
How do the scenarios work?
Members are given two scenarios per week:
- one vehicle defect scenario
- one scenario covering another compliance area (e.g. drivers’ hours, maintenance systems, enforcement encounters, records, or operator licence issues)
Members respond using a simple structured framework. Guidance is then provided to benchmark thinking against good professional practice.
Are the scenarios based on real situations?
Yes. Scenarios are based on real-world situations transport managers commonly face. They are anonymised and adapted for mentoring purposes.
They are illustrative and intended to support learning and judgement, not to be copied directly into live operational decisions.
What is the Transport Manager Toolbox?
The Transport Manager Toolbox is a one-off digital product containing practical, editable templates and tools, including:
- defect and vehicle control templates
- maintenance and PMI planning spreadsheets
- driver compliance check records
- intervention and disciplinary letter templates
- audit readiness checklists
- .... and much more!
It provides a solid operational foundation but does not include mentoring or ongoing updates.
What’s the difference between Operational Readiness and Operational Control?
Operational Readiness – Transport Manager focuses on written mentoring through scenarios, with benchmark guidance and access to the members’ Toolbox and scenario library.
Operational Control – Advanced Transport Manager includes everything in Operational Readiness, plus:
- discount on one to one mentoring sessions
- Submission of up to 2 discussion scenarios or questions per month, for personal response
- one complimentary one-to-one mentoring session per quarter
- discounted access to additional one-to-one sessions
- ... and much more!
Are one-to-one sessions included?
For members of Operational Control – Advanced Transport Manager, one complimentary 30-minute one-to-one mentoring session is included per quarter (subject to minimum membership duration).
Additional one-to-one sessions are available to Advanced members at a reduced rate.
One-to-one sessions are mentoring-scoped and do not replace consultancy services.
How often are subscriptions billed?
Subscriptions are billed every four weeks (13 billing periods per year). All prices are inclusive of VAT.
Can I cancel my subscription?
Yes. Subscriptions are rolling. You can cancel in line with the published terms, and access will continue until the end of the paid period.
Does this programme guarantee compliance or prevent enforcement action?
No. There are no guarantees of compliance or enforcement outcomes.
The programme supports better judgement, consistency, and confidence, but responsibility for compliance always remains with the transport manager and operator.
Who delivers the mentoring?
Mentoring is predominantly delivered by Fleet Services Southwest Ltd's senior consultant, but may involve a suitably appointed assistant or associate from time to time, all operating under the same mentoring framework.
